In the eighteenth century the term “copper bottomed” described ships that were fitted with copper sheathing on the bottom to protect the boats’ wooden hulls from barnacle infestation and to increase overall speed and maneuverability. Back then, once a boat was copper bottomed, the boat was considered reliable and a safe financial investment. A local Boston copper-bottomed boat is the USS Constitution which is considered the world’s oldest war ship. In the war of 1812, the USS Constitution was manned by many Marblehead sailors and, in 1813, was safe havened in Marblehead Harbor after narrowly escaping two British frigates. 

Today, “copper bottom” or “copper bottomed” is a term more broadly used to describe something that is trustworthy and unlikely to fail, especially in reference to a financial investment.
